Chemical Engineer - Industrial Gases Production

About the Role Our client, a major producer and supplier of industrial gases, is seeking an experienced Chemical Engineer to join their operations team in Bloemfontein, Free State. This role is critical for ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable production of various industrial gases, including oxygen, nitrogen, and argon. You will be involved in process monitoring, optimization, troubleshooting, and implementing improvements to enhance plant performance and product quality. Key Responsibilities

• Oversee and optimize chemical processes for the production of industrial gases, primarily through cryogenic air separation.
• Monitor plant performance data, identify deviations, and implement corrective actions.
• Conduct root cause analysis for operational upsets and equipment failures.
• Develop and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, yield, and safety.
• Ensure strict adherence to safety, health, and environmental (SHE) regulations and company standards.
• Prepare technical reports, operational analyses, and recommendations for management.
• Collaborate with maintenance and operations teams to ensure plant reliability.
• Participate in process hazard analyses (PHAs) and risk assessments.
• Assist in the commissioning and start-up of new equipment or process modifications.
• Stay current with technological advancements in the industrial gas industry.

Requirements

• B.Eng. or B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering.
• Minimum of 6 years of experience in chemical process engineering, with a strong preference for experience in industrial gas production or cryogenic processes.
• Solid understanding of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and mass transfer principles.
• Experience with process control systems (DCS) and data analysis is essential.
• Proficiency in process simulation software.
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team.
• Commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
• Registered Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) designation is highly desirable.
• Willingness to work a hybrid schedule, involving both on-site presence in Bloemfontein and remote work components.
