Senior Urban Design Architect

About the Role

Our client, a highly respected urban planning and design consultancy based in Pretoria, Gauteng , is seeking an accomplished Senior Urban Design Architect to play a key role in shaping the future of urban landscapes. This position is crucial for developing innovative and sustainable urban environments that enhance the quality of life for residents. You will be responsible for leading the design process for large-scale urban regeneration projects, master planning initiatives, and public realm enhancements. We are looking for a strategic thinker with a passion for placemaking, a deep understanding of urban dynamics, and the ability to translate complex urban challenges into coherent and inspiring design solutions. Key Responsibilities

• Lead the conceptualization and development of urban design strategies and master plans for diverse projects.
• Create compelling visual representations, including master plans, site plans, 3D models, and design guidelines.
• Conduct urban analysis, including site assessments, context studies, and stakeholder consultations.
• Collaborate with city planners, developers, engineers, and community groups to ensure integrated and context-sensitive designs.
• Prepare and present urban design proposals, reports, and presentations to clients, municipal authorities, and the public.
• Ensure designs align with local planning policies, sustainability goals, and heritage considerations in Gauteng .
• Mentor and guide junior urban designers and architects within the team.
• Oversee the implementation of urban design projects, ensuring design integrity throughout the construction phase.

Requirements

• Master's degree in Architecture, Urban Design, or Urban Planning.
• A minimum of 8 years of professional experience specifically in urban design and master planning.
• Demonstrated experience in leading urban design projects from concept to implementation.
• Proficiency in urban design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, Rhino, Adobe Creative Suite, and GIS.
• Strong understanding of urban planning principles, public space design, and sustainable urban development practices.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
• Knowledge of South African planning legislation and municipal by-laws, particularly relevant to Pretoria and the Gauteng province.
• Ability to manage project timelines and deliverables effectively.
• SACAP registration or equivalent professional body membership is preferred.
