Job Description
Key responsibilities :
- Analysing and suggesting solutions to moderately complex problems in accordance with organization and / or project objectives and guidelines.
- Performing roads and highways pavement design from inception up to close out in accordance with design standards using standards, manuals and guideline documents stipulated by the Employer / Client.
- Perform pavement investigations including visual assessments, Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) testing, DCP testing, and material sampling.
- Design new pavement structures and develop rehabilitation strategies using mechanistic-empirical design methods (e.g., using software such as Rubicon, SATRAC, or Civil Design).
- Prepare pavement design reports and technical documentation in line with South African approved manuals and TMH standards (e.g., TMH1, TMH6, TRH14).
- Analyse pavement condition data and recommend maintenance or rehabilitation treatments.
- Oversee materials testing and ensure compliance with COLTO, COTO, and relevant specifications.
- Review and approve pavement-related drawings, specifications, and construction documentation.
- Liaise with SANRAL representatives, contractors, materials laboratories, and other engineering professionals.
- Monitor and provide technical input during construction, including quality assurance and conformance testing.
- Contribute to the preparation of tender documentation and evaluation of contractor bids.
- Ensure health, safety, and environmental compliance on project sites.
- Application of general drawing control practices.
- Ability to develop designs aligned to labour intensive methodologies where required.
- Formal report writing and professional presentation of work.
- Promoting and applying ethical and professional practices.
- To perform all work in accordance with the Companys Quality Management System (QMS), Policies and Standards.
- Supporting the engineering team on projects to complete the design work on time and within budget.
- Providing input and technical guidance to CAD designers / draughters and lower-level engineers / technologists / technicians.
Full time involvement will be required in the following project stages :
Project Assessments.Investigations for Design Development.Preliminary Design.Detailed Design.Tender Documentation preparation and attending to clarification meetings.Administration and Monitoring of the Works Contract and;Close Out.Develop design criteria for pavements on the following work types (the list in not exhaustive) :
Preventative treatments (MPP).Resurfacing (MPR).Special Maintenance.Non-Pavement Maintenance.Pavement.Qualifications
BTech / BEng / BSc in Civil Engineering.Registration with ECSA as a Professional Engineer / Engineering Technologist.Proficiency in pavement design software (e.g., Rubicon, SATRAC, EverStressFE).5-10 years experience required in design of pavements of higher order (National roads).Must be familiar with road design standards and procedures.Demonstrates experience in pavement design, rehabilitation, and evaluation techniques.Familiarity with SANRAL procedures, procurement processes, and design guidelines.Skills
Proficiency in pavement design software (e.g., Rubicon, SATRAC, EverStressFE).Strong understanding of South African pavement design methods (mechanistic-empirical, G1-G9 classifications).Knowledge of relevant technical standards : TMH, TRH, COTO, COLTO.Competency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, MS Office Suite, and relevant project management tools.
