Departmental Synopsis

Ranked no 1 in Africa according to the QS Rankings in Hospitality and Leisure studies, the School of Tourism and Hospitality offers diplomas, degrees and postgraduate programmes. Continuous education programmes equip graduates with skills applicable across the tourism and hospitality value chain.

The New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) is a Department of Higher Education and Training nationally funded programme recruiting a new cohort of young academics. Candidates must be 40 years or younger and the programme enables nGAP appointments to benefit from teaching and research development opportunities. The incumbent must register for or have earned a PhD.

Apart from presenting lectures in tourism development and management to undergraduate and honours students, the appointee will actively conduct research, supervise postgraduate students and participate in the School’s other activities.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will contribute meaningfully to the School’s projects, teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules, supervise postgraduate students and publish research. The incumbent will :

• Prepare and deliver lectures for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
• Prepare and conduct practical sessions for students.
• Prepare and mark assessments such as assignments, tests and exams.
• Assist with developing course material for undergraduate and postgraduate modules.
• Demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching excellence and productive research, including teaching innovation and online tools.
• Be actively involved in the School’s core activities such as teaching, research, academic administration, short‑course development, community projects and school events.
• Annually publish peer‑reviewed papers in accredited scientific or academic journals and deliver papers at national and international conferences.
• Actively conduct research independently and collaboratively.
• Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students.
• Obtain research funding from external funding bodies, national and international agencies and industry.
• Advance the discipline of Tourism Development and Management through industry and community engagement.
• Drive the Global Excellence and Stature (GES) 4.0 objectives of UJ.
