Business Development Lead | Renewable Energy Projects | Johannesburg-based, Pan-African Focus

AltGen Recruitment is seeking a Business Development Lead for a client operating within the renewable energy distribution and project development space. Our client supplies solar panels, inverters, and batteries to residential, commercial, and industrial clients across Africa, with an office based in Midrand, Johannesburg . In addition to product distribution, they also provide funding facilities for large-scale utility projects across the continent.

This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic, high-performing professional to originate, secure, and scale large energy projects across Southern, Eastern, and West Africa . The ideal candidate will combine strong technical understanding with commercial acumen to drive growth and long-term partnerships in the renewable energy market.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and develop a pipeline of energy projects (over 1MW) - including IPP, EPC, and private sector deals
  • Lead end-to-end business development , from opportunity identification to financial close
  • Establish and manage strategic partnerships with developers, funders, EPCs, and municipalities
  • Monitor market trends, regulations, and competitor activities across target regions
  • Prepare and present investment-grade proposals and commercial terms
  • Contribute to P&L targets, margin analysis , and market entry strategies

Requirements

  • 8+ years in business development or project sales within the energy or infrastructure sectors
  • Proven success in closing large-scale, multi-million-dollar deals across Africa
  • Strong network within ministries, private sector clients, developers, and financiers
  • Excellent negotiation, commercial, and presentation skills
  • Fluent in English (French or Portuguese is a strong advantage)
  • Willingness to travel across Africa as needed
  • Solid technical understanding of solar, storage, or hybrid systems preferred
  • Experience leading multicultural teams or regional operations is advantageous
  • Entrepreneurial mindset or start-up exposure is a plus
