The Commercial Underwriter will be a crucial member of our short-term commercial team, responsible for assessing, accepting, pricing, and managing commercial risks.
This role requires an individual who can balance profitable underwriting with excellent broker / client relationship management.
The ideal candidate will be highly analytical, detail-oriented, and possess a comprehensive understanding of the commercial insurance market.
Location : Randburg.
Salary Range : R25,000 to R35,000 per month (depending on experience and qualifications).

Key Responsibilities :
- Risk Assessment and Acceptance : Evaluate new and existing commercial policy applications, renewals, and endorsements by analysing risk profiles, claims history, financial stability, and market conditions.
- Pricing and Quotation : Determine appropriate premium rates and policy terms in line with our underwriting guidelines and profitability targets, providing timely and accurate quotations.
- Policy Management : Process policy renewals, amendments, cancellations, and endorsements efficiently, ensuring all documentation is accurate and compliant.
- Compliance and Governance : Ensure all underwriting activities adhere to regulatory requirements, internal guidelines, and the Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) principles.
- Stakeholder Relations : Maintain professional and effective communication with brokers, agents, and internal stakeholders to facilitate smooth operations and drive business development.
- Portfolio Management : Monitor the performance and profitability of the assigned commercial portfolio, making recommendations and adjustments as necessary.
- Data Integrity : Ensure accurate capturing and maintenance of all underwriting data and risk information within the company’s systems.
Desired Experience & Qualification :
Essential Requirements :
RE5 (Representative / Key Individual) certification is mandatory.Relevant FAIS (Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act) credits or qualifications.A minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a Commercial Underwriter (or similar capacity) within a short-term insurance environment.Proven understanding of commercial products, including but not limited to : Commercial Property, Business Interruption, Motor Fleet, Liability, and Engineering.Excellent communication (written and verbal) and negotiation skills.Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.Desirable Attributes :
A relevant tertiary qualification (e.g., degree or diploma in Insurance, Risk Management, or Finance).Experience working with various underwriting platforms and software systems.Proven track record of maintaining a profitable book of business.Why Join Us?
