Programme Context
UNICEF South Africa works with the Department of Basic Education to improve the South African school food environment through the Nutrition School Ambassadors (NUSA) initiative. The initiative complements the National School Nutrition Programme’s Nutrition Education pillar by promoting peer‑led approaches that empower learners to become active agents of change for their own school food environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Write and submit an inception report outlining methodology, workplan, timeline and package materials.
- Review and adapt existing nutrition education materials, ensuring alignment with the national curriculum and the Nutrition Education (NE) pillar of the NSNP.
- Provide technical and strategic support to strengthen learner‑led advocacy and peer education within NUSA.
- Conduct orientation and sensitization workshops in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State, Northern Cape and North‑West provinces for DBE management teams at provincial and district levels.
- Build capacity of NUSA members in selected schools and conduct supportive monitoring visits.
- Co‑create and disseminate a package of information materials in various formats (social media tiles, blogs, scripts, surveys, press releases).
- Liaise with Fix My Food advocates to scale advocacy initiatives and support campus club volunteers.
- Develop and implement a monitoring and evaluation framework to track progress, outcomes and impact of the NUSA initiative.
- Prepare and present comprehensive written reports, lessons learned and best‑practice recommendations to UNICEF and DBE.

Advanced degree (MPH, MSc, etc.) in public health, nutrition, health education or related discipline.Minimum 5 years of experience in public health, nutrition or social and behavior change communication.Knowledge of child and adolescent nutrition, food systems, health promotion and / or NCD prevention.Experience in youth engagement, advocacy or similar educational campaigns.Proven track record in developing capacity‑building materials (manuals, job aids, tools).Strong project‑management, writing, facilitation and communication skills.Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with Canva, Photoshop or similar tools desirable.Fluency in English; knowledge of other South African languages an advantage.Desirable Skills & Attributes
Expertise in social and behavior change communication campaigns.Knowledge of nutrition, food systems, health promotion or NCD prevention.Experience working with international development organizations or UNICEF.Application
