Duties & Responsibilities

The North-West University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the following position, which forms part of the New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). Preference will be given to applications from black (African, Coloured and Indian), female and disabled candidates, with a target that at least 80% of applicants should be appointed from these groups. Applicants must be SA citizens and 40 years or younger of age. The nGAP represents the ninth phase of the Staffing South African Universities Framework (SSAUF), which aims at addressing the urgent and challenging imperative to recruit, support and retain black (African, Coloured and Indian), female academic and disabled staff to address the under-representation at all levels in the sector. nGAP employees will participate in a six-year developmental programme in terms of which they will be employed on a permanent full-time basis at the NWU under the University's normal conditions of service. They will be expected to register for and complete their doctoral studies, participate successfully in the DHET's Staffing South Africa's Universities Development Programme, and work under the supervision of an appointed mentor. In order to achieve the developmental aims of the programme, nGAP employees will have a reduced teaching load over the first four years of their appointment. They will be expected to work for an additional two years at NWU after the completion of the six-year developmental programme. Applicants should have a Master's degree with an academic average of 70% for the Master’s degree, this is essential. Proof of results must be attached to the application.

Purpose of the Position

The nGAP position in the School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering (SEECE) is part of the SSAUF initiative by the DHET to improve the academic staffing at South African universities. It is a prestigious programme to enable young black candidates to follow a career as an academic. nGAP employees will participate in a six-year developmental programme on a permanent full-time basis under the University's normal conditions of service and will work under the supervision of an appointed mentor. In order to achieve the developmental aims of the programme, nGAP employees will have a reduced teaching load over the first three years of their appointment.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities :

Teaching

  • Years 1-3 : Be responsible for at least one undergraduate module in the SEECE.
  • Year 4 onwards : Be responsible for at least two undergraduate modules in the SEECE plus undergraduate projects, as per the annual task agreement.

Final Year Supervision

  • Years 1-3 : Limited to own development.
  • Year 4 onwards : Progressively more research in a research group associated with the school, including postgraduate study supervision, as per the annual task agreement.
  • Research

  • Completion of own postgraduate study and research experience.
  • Professional body registration.
  • School Administration

  • As required / per task agreement.
  • Desired Experience & Qualification

  • Bachelor’s in Engineering (B Eng / BSc Eng) in Electrical Engineering / Electronic Engineering / Computer Engineering / Mechatronic Engineering / Electromechanical Engineering.
  • Any Masters in Engineering or a Masters in a related field e.g. Mathematics. A Masters in the field of the Bachelor’s degree will be preferred.
  • The Master's degree must be achieved with an average of 70% or above. Please attach proof of results in your application.

  • Additional Desirable Competencies :

  • Registerable with ECSA as Candidate Engineer.
  • SAIEE or IEEE or similar membership.
  • Key Functional Competencies :

  • Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), email and internet.
  • Knowledge of the appropriate assessment theory and practice to enhance student performance.
  • Research methodology and technical writing.
  • A proven commitment to teaching and learning, including a willingness to become involved in students’ educational development and wellbeing.
  • Knowledge of modern platforms (e.g., whiteboard technology, eFundi, etc.) to enhance the ongoing changing of the learning and collaboration environment.
  • Good interpersonal relations and a client-service orientation.
  • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU.
  • The ability to function well individually and as part of a team / subject group.
  • Good analytical abilities and innovative thinking, as well as ability to be self-driven.
  • The ability to solve problems independently.
  • Good planning and organising skills as well as good report writing skills.
  • A high level of professional and ethical conduct.
