This position reports to the Head of Risk and Security.
Purpose of this role
The National Health and Safety Lead is responsible for developing, implementing and managing the organisation’s health and safety programmes across all national DCs. The role ensures compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation, promotes a culture of safety and reduces occupational risks for employees and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
1. Legal Compliance
Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 and other applicable health, safety and environmental legislation.
Conduct regular audits and inspections across all DCs to ensure legal and procedural compliance.
Maintain all health and safety documentation including risk assessments, incident reports and training records.
2. Policy and Procedure Management
Develop and implement national health and safety policies and SOPs for all warehousing activities.
Review and update health and safety procedures regularly in line with legislative and operational changes.
3. Training & Development
Plan and deliver health and safety training including induction, fire safety, emergency response, manual handling and hazardous material management.
Promote safety awareness through toolbox talks, safety days and campaigns.
4. Risk Management
Conduct site‑specific risk assessments and implement risk‑control measures.
Lead investigations into incidents, near misses and injuries ensuring root‑cause analysis and preventative actions are implemented.
5. Emergency Preparedness
Ensure that all warehouse sites have up‑to‑date emergency response plans, fire evacuation procedures and first aid provisions.
Coordinate emergency drills across sites and ensure compliance with fire regulations.
6. Reporting and Analysis
Compile monthly health and safety reports for senior management highlighting trends, incidents and recommendations.
Monitor and analyse health and safety performance metrics across all sites.
7. Stakeholder Engagement
Liaise with local authorities, contractors, insurance providers and regulatory bodies during inspections and compliance checks.
Represent the company in external audits and health and safety forums.
Qualifications and Experience
Diploma or 10-15 years experience with progressively increasing responsibility in safety and health management.
SAMTRAC certification.
NEBOSH Management of International Health & Safety.
Certified Risk Management (ISO 31000).
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Leadership and communication abilities, problem‑solving skills.
Proficiency in health and safety management systems (e.g. ISO 45001).
