Senior Microbiologist - Food Safety

About the Role

Our client is looking for a highly qualified Senior Microbiologist to lead their Food Safety and Quality Assurance team in Benoni . This role is critical for ensuring the microbiological safety of food products throughout the supply chain, from raw materials to finished goods. You will be responsible for developing and implementing robust microbiological testing programs, investigating non-compliance issues, and driving continuous improvement in food safety protocols. The ideal candidate possesses extensive expertise in food microbiology, a strong understanding of regulatory standards, and a commitment to public health through safe food production.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, validate, and implement microbiological testing methods for raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products.
• Conduct risk assessments and implement control strategies to mitigate microbiological hazards.
• Investigate customer complaints and out-of-specification results related to microbial contamination.
• Ensure compliance with relevant food safety regulations and industry standards (e.g., HACCP, ISO 22000).
• Train and mentor junior laboratory personnel on microbiological techniques and safety protocols.
• Stay updated on emerging microbiological risks and best practices in the food industry.

Requirements

• M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Microbiology, Food Science, or a related field.
• Minimum of 6 years of experience in food microbiology, with a focus on food safety and quality assurance.
• In-depth knowledge of common foodborne pathogens and spoilage microorganisms.
• Proficiency in various microbiological techniques, including culture-based methods, rapid testing methods, and potentially molecular techniques.
• Experience with HACCP principles and other food safety management systems.
• Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills for the Benoni facility.
