Senior Attorney / Director : Law Clinic (Coastal Region)

Emeris National Office has a vacancy for a Senior Attorney / Director : Law Clinic (Coastal Region). The successful candidate can be based in Durban or Cape Town.

Responsibilities

• Case Management and Legal Processes : Interpreting laws, rules, and regulations; Manage all matters from time of consultation until such time as matter is litigated, closed or referred to an Attorney or Advocate within the required standards of the profession; Legal advice and guidance to clients; Drafting of pleadings and correspondence; Negotiating and drafting of various agreements and corporate documents; Researching law and drafting legal opinions; Managing of serving and filing through candidate attorneys; Participating in the interview of witnesses; Preparing cases for trial or alternate dispute resolution; Undertaking the legal work to the highest professional and client care standards; Co-ordinate legal training at the Clinic; Analysing probable outcomes based on legal precedents; Provide legal representation in matters within our jurisdiction; Litigating in civil courts, tribunals, and arbitrations.
• Management and Administration of Clinics : Maintaining the confidentiality of legal documents and client records; Updating and managing case load, staff and operational requirements at Emeris Durban, Cape Town and Nelson Mandela Bay Clinics; Co-ordination and reporting on case statistics to the Dean : Faculty of Law; Oversee preparation of clinic budget for the coastal region and manage expenditure; Update clients, stakeholders and attorneys on client matters; Play an active role in the development of policies and procedures of the Law Clinic; Provide legal secretary / intern with instructions.
• Supervision and Student Engagement : Supervising all law students in his / her care; Managing the practical legal component of the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) module; Managing the monitoring of and evaluation of student performance; Train, supervise and guide candidate legal practitioners; Provide individual mentoring for and coaching of legal practitioners and candidate attorneys; Monitor and evaluate the quality of work performed by the 4th year IIE LLB students in their WIL module.
• Collaboration and Community Engagement : Maintaining a professional and harmonious relationship with a wide range of stakeholders in the legal industry including NGOs, Court personnel, law firms, potential donor funders, Legal Aid and other public interest initiatives; Facilitating Community and Attorney workshops; Engaging with the different courts to hold Advice Desks.

• Special Requirements : Candidate must be able to organise outreach and other community engagement initiatives on the last Saturday morning of each month; Be able to monitor and assess performance of yourself, other individuals or organisations to make improvement or take corrective action.
