Introduction
This role is responsible for full underwriting support across Commercial Lines insurance within a brokerage. The Underwriter will manage all aspects of the policy lifecycle, including quotations, amendments, renewals, and system processing, while engaging with clients, brokers and insurers. The position plays a key role in maintaining underwriting accuracy, client satisfaction, compliance, and operational efficiency.
Duties & Responsibilities
Internal Business Processes
- Underwrite and process new commercial lines business, policy amendments, endorsements, cancellations and renewals timeously.
- Ensure all policy and client data is accurately captured on all internal systems.
- Interpret and apply technical underwriting guidelines and company standards as per various insurers.
- Ensure strict compliance with all internal processes, industry regulations, legislative requirements and all insurer's operational procedures.
- Assist with internal system testing, audits, and process reviews as needed.
- Adhoc related tasks as assigned from time to time.
Customer Perspective
Build and maintain effective relationships with intermediaries, brokers and clients.Provide expert technical underwriting and rating advice on Commercial Lines policies.Ensure clear, accurate and professional communication on all policy matters within service delivery given timeframes (queries, new business, endorsements, confirmations of cover, cancellations and renewals) to all intermediaries, brokers and clients.Financial Perspective
Apply sound risk assessment practices and pricing to support profitable underwriting as per insurers' mandates and underwriting guidelines.Maintain high accuracy standards to reduce mistakes and improve cost‑effectiveness.Contribute to policy retention through proactive renewal management.Learning & Growth
Keep up to date with market trends, product changes, and underwriting best practices through product, system, and compliance training.Continuously seek opportunities to improve underwriting skills and knowledge.Contribute positively to team culture through collaboration, teamwork and knowledge sharing.Desired Experience & Qualification
Grade 12 (Matric).FAIS compliant (RE5) – essential / working towards within 12 months.NQF4 Insurance related qualification – essential (working towards).Minimum 5+ years' experience in the short‑term insurance industry, with a focus on Commercial Lines Underwriting within a brokerage or an Insurer.In-depth knowledge of commercial lines products, risk assessment, policy wordings, and pricing structures.Computer literacy – Microsoft Office.Tial or Cardinal knowledge – advantageous – some form of IT operational system must be evident.Fully bilingual (English & Afrikaans).Excellent negotiation, communication, and decision‑making skills.Ability to work independently and manage small to large commercial portfolios.Strong attention to detail and administrative accuracy.Interested?
