We are seeking unique people who believe in fostering a diverse and inclusive and safe environment.We’re on the lookout for an experienced Maintenance Superintendent : Turner / Machinist to perform frontline management of the mechanical workshop (turning section) and machining activities, ensuring the manufacture, repair, and maintenance of high-quality mechanical components that support reliable plant operation. The role provides technical leadership to the Turning / Machining and Fitting teams and ensures that workshop equipment is fully utilized, and that operations are executed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with mill standards and engineering best practices.As a Maintenance Superintendent : Turner / Machinist, you will be responsible for :
Plan, coordinate, and supervise all machining and turning work within the mechanical workshopAssess equipment, materials, and labour required to complete machining, fabrication, and repair tasksEnsure that machining and mechanical maintenance activities meet set quality and safety standards while minimizing downtime and wasteAllocate and prioritize work orders to turners and machinists to ensure timely delivery of components to production areasCollaborate with Maintenance Engineers, Production, and Planning teams to ensure machining jobs align with operational prioritiesMaintain workshop machinery (lathes, milling machines, drilling, and grinding equipment) to ensure reliability and precisionOversee the manufacture and repair of rotating components (shafts, sleeves, bushes, couplings, etc.) within tolerance specificationsCoordinate external machining and contractor work to ensure compliance with Sappi’s quality and safety standardsPrepare and maintain accurate job documentation, drawings, and inspection reports in accordance with mill and legal requirementsConduct feasibility studies and provide technical input for modifications and engineering improvement projectsWork overtime, standby, and act in a higher position when requiredManages a portion of the Workshop Fitting / Turning TeamStands in for the Fitting Superintendent, when required toSupervise and develop turners, machinists, and apprentices to build technical competence and ensure effective team performanceManage workforce planning, performance management, and training interventions to maintain adequate skill levelsProvide ongoing coaching and mentoring to promote multi-skilling and continuous improvementEvaluate individual and team performance against goals, ensuring accountability and alignment with departmental standardsFoster a collaborative, safety-conscious, and results-driven workshop cultureUnderstand and enforce SHEQ requirements within the workshop and ensure full compliance with statutory and company ISO standardsConduct risk assessments, toolbox talks, and safety inspections to identify and address hazards proactivelyMonitor subordinates’ adherence to safety procedures and correct non-conformances promptlyInvestigate SHEQ incidents, determine root causes, and implement corrective and preventive actionsMaintain a high level of housekeeping and organization (5S principles) in the workshop at all timesWhat are we looking for?
